Africká unie vznikla v roce 2002 s cílem efektivně reagovat na problémy, kterým čelí současná Afrika. Jednou z prioritních oblastí jejího zájmu se stalo prosazování míru a bezpečnosti, v následujících letech tak Africká unie za účelem předcházení a urovnávání sporů a konfliktů zřídila systém bezpečnostních institucí a mechanismů a vytvořila řadu strategických dokumentů. Cílem této práce bylo zhodnotit potenciál Africké unie v oblasti řešení ozbrojených konfliktů. Africká unie dosud zrealizovala čtyři mírové mise včetně bezprecedentní společné mise s Organizací spojených národů. Na jejich výsledku se negativně odrazily nedostatečné finance i chybějící zkušenosti Africké unie s vedením misí. Mise se navíc potýkaly s nedostatečnou podporou ze strany členských států. Africká unie se zatím neobejde bez pomoci vnějších partnerů, ti ale podmiňují poskytnutou pomoc řadou požadavků a svazují tak Africkou unii svými agendami. Nepoměr mezi ambicemi Africké unie a jejími zdroji, kapacitami i politickou vůlí členských států zatím znemožňuje efektivní fungování celého bezpečnostního systému organizace.The African Union was established in 2002 with the aim of responding effectively to the problems confronting contemporary Africa. One of its priority areas of focus has become the promotion of peace and security. In the intervening years a system of security institutions and mechanisms has been set up and many strategic documents have been created for the purposes of prevention and settlement of disputes and conflicts. This thesis aims to assess the potential of the African Union in relation to management of armed conflicts. To date the African Union has carried out four peacekeeping missions including an unprecedented joint peace operation with the United Nations. Their results have been negatively affected by a severe shortage of funds as well as a lack of experiences with the management of peace operations. In addition, they have suffered from the insufficient support of the member states. The African Union is dependent on external partners who often condition the provided aid and thus constrain the African Union by their agendas. The disproportion between the ambitions of the African Union and its resources, capacity and the member states' political will undermines the effective functioning of the whole security system of the organization.
