Note	Variace v populaci antigenů, které jsou výsledkem menších, postupných mutací (antigenní drift) nebo náhlých a zásadních mutací (antigenní shift). Postupná akumulace menších mutací (antigenní drift) si může vyžádat vývoj nové vakcíny (např. sezónních vakcín proti chřipce). Antigenní shift je naproti tomu méně obvyklý, ale může vést ke vzniku nových subtypů nebo kmenů, které mohou vyvolat pandemii (např. pandemie H1N1 v letech 2009 a 2018 a pandemie COVID-19). Důvodem vzniku pandemie je v takovém případě chybějící kolektivní imunita vůči nově vzniklému patogenu.
