Cílem této diplomové práce bude získat veškeré dostupné prameny a literaturu vázající se k osobnosti Františka Mencla a vytvořit tak souhrnnou monografii zabývající se jeho dnes téměř opomíjenou činností v oblasti mostního stavitelství a urbanismu, ale také v této době moderní problematice kremace. Jeho působení tedy zasáhlo celou řadu sfér: jako stavební rada hl. m. Prahy a odborník na mostní stavitelství zásadním způsobem ovlivnil dnešní podobu centra města. Roku 1919 je zvolen druhým předsedou Spolku přátel žehu, kam jeho cesta mířila přes ateistické hnutí Volná myšlenka. Svou publikační činností propaguje pohřeb ohněm a jako porotce u celé řady architektonických soutěží svými kritikami formuje krematorium jako nový stavební typ. Zaštiťuje také řadu veřejných výstav a přednášek a je jedním z iniciátorů mezinárodní organizace Mezinárodní kremační federace, která byla založena v Londýně. Tato diplomová práce se pokusí postihnout názory a myšlenky Františka Mencla a zároveň odhalit jeho vliv na podobu architektury a představit nejzásadnější práce včetně dobového kontextu.The aim of this master thesis is acquiring every available literature and archive sources concerning personality of Ing. František Mencl. It creates a complex monograph about his work in the area of bridge engineering and urbanism and also about the cremation movement and burial by fire. During his career as a senior engineer and later head of Bridge section of Building Code Department of the Prague City Hall, he influenced the appearance of bridges in the city centre. After his experience in the atheistic movement Freethought, he was elected second chairman of the Company of friends of burial by fire in 1919. He wrote many papers and publications about crematoriums and influenced their development as independent architectural type. He organized many public exhibitions and discussion lectures and also initiated the foundation of International Cremation Federation (ICF) in London in 1937. This thesis tries to summarize ideas and thoughts of František Mencl, to express his influence on architecture, and present his main projects within historical context.
