Diplomová práce zachycuje změny, které nastaly ve městě Ostrava po roce 1990, kdy region, v němž se město nachází, prošel útlumem těžby a tradiční výroby, stal se strukturálně postiženým, s potřebou hledat nové impulzy pro regionální rozvoj. Jednotlivé oblasti, kterými se práce v empirické části zabývá, jsou vymezeny na základě poznatků z konceptů Starých průmyslových regionů a "smršťujících se měst". Práce je dále doplněna i o teoretický základ ekonomické transformace v České republice, která je hlavní příčinou změn, které se na území města udály.This thesis represents the changes which occurred in the city of Ostrava after 1990, when the region, where the city is located, went through reduction of mining and traditional production, became structurally affected with a need to seek new impulses for regional development. Individual areas the thesis deals with are defined based on knowledge of the concepts of Old industrial regions and "shrinking cities". The thesis is supplemented by theoretical foundations of economic transformation in the Czech Republic which is the main cause of changes that have occurred the city.
