Cílem této práce je identifikovat, jak se v Kawabatově románu Meidžin projevuje téma střetu tradičního a moderního Japonska, které se významným způsobem prolíná celou Kawabatovou tvorbou. Nejprve jsou představeny základní informace o románu Meidžin s důrazem na aspekty korespondující s tématem, například název či kompozici románu. Následně jsou detailně charakterizovány dvě hlavní postavy románu, které zřetelně představují tradiční a moderní způsob myšlení, po čemž je přistoupeno k jejich porovnání. Zevrubnou analýzou textu románu a jeho interpretací podloženou i odbornou literaturou je tedy zkoumáno, jakým způsobem je v románu kontrast mezi tradicí a modernitou zpracován. V poslední části je chronologicky rozebrán děj románu, spočívající ve střetu popsaných hlavních postav, na čemž je sledováno, jak v románu konflikt probíhá a jakým způsobem nakonec vyznívá.The aim of this thesis is to identify how the theme of conflict between traditional and modern Japan manifests in Kawabata's novel Meijin ('The Master of Go'). First, basic information about the novel is introduced, with emphasis on the aspects corresponding with the theme, such as the title or the complex composition of the novel. Next, the two main characters of the novel - Meijin and ?take, representing traditional and modern way of thinking respectively - are thoroughly characterised and then compared. The contrast between these two characters in terms of personality, as well as playing style and attitude to the game of go is what the theme of tradition against modernity is mainly based on in the novel. Lastly, the plot of the novel is put into chronological order and analysed with special attention to how the theme of the conflict develops and what it leads to. It can be said that the plot development and result give the impression of inevitability of the result of the tradition-modernity conflict, as well as poignant sadness about it, which connects well with japanese traditional aesthetics.
