Cílem této diplomové práce je zpracovat historii a vývoj Amerického fotbalu a nastínit způsob jakým se tento sport dostal na úroveň nejoblíbenějšího sportu v kultuře USA. Z důvodu nedostatku materiálů v ČR byla práce zpracována na studijním pobytu v USA. Ze stejného důvodu mi byly hlavním zdrojem Anglicky psané historické a odborné publikace. Zpracování této práce předcházely měsíce studia reálií a kulturních podkladů a shromažďování informací a literatury z dané oblasti. Závěry: Kořeny Amerického fotbalu sahají k samým počátkům Spojených států - ke kolonizaci Amerického kontinentu. Ve formativním období devatenáctého století se na Amerických univerzitách tento sport přiblížil dnešní podobě, a po založení chatrné profesionální ligy NFL v roce 1920 se vypracoval až na pozici Amerického sportovního fenoménu dnešní doby.Purpose of the thesis is to provide an analysis of history of the American football and its gradual development. It should also hint a journey of this sport to the position of the most popular pastime in the culture of the USA. Due to insufficiency of study materials and data in general in the Czech Republic, the whole work had to be accomplished on a stipend stay in the USA. Due to the same reason, main sources were historical and scientific publications written in English. Months of background and culture studies, as well as gathering of informations and various literature in the field preceded the process of compilation itself. Results: Roots of the American football can be traced as far as to the beginnings of the United States itself; to the colonization of the north American continent. It was American institutions of higher education, universities, what moved the sport towards the modern appearance in the formative era of the 19th century. After the establishment of clumsy professional league of NFL in the 1920, the American football gradually developed to the position of an American phenomenon of the present time.
