This book is a collection of papers drawn from academic and practitioner research presented at the Tourism Research 2002 conference held in Cardiff. It comments on a range of issues concerning small and medium-sized tourism enterprises (tourism SMEs) in diverse destinations worldwide, and explores various aspects of a model of tourism SMEs proposed in chapter 1. The collection is arranged into thematic sections to reflect the model: destination (chapter 2-4); tourism SMEs (chapter 5-9); employees (chapter 10-14); public-sector interventions (chapters 15-18); and marketing/image (chapters 19-21). Chapter 22 concludes that the development of coherence in destinations dominated by SMEs is achievable provided that stakeholders involved in destination development learn from successful case studies. The book has a subject index.
