Tato diplomová práce analyzuje přístupy postav k cizincům v dílech Paní Chrysanthema a Madame Butterfly a srovnává je. Zkoumány jsou faktory, které mohou ovlivnit rozdílné konečné vyznění těchto děl - dobu a zemi vzniku, autenticitu příběhu, způsob vyprávění, i jazyk zvolený ke komunikaci mezi postavami. Analýza ukazuje, že obě díla pomocí přístupu postav prezentují vztah muže ze Západu s Japonkou jako neuskutečnitelný, jejich důvody se ale liší. Zatímco v Paní Chrysanthemě je soužití nemožné kvůli odstupu, který od sebe hlavní dvojice chová, v Madame Butterfly manželství selže kvůli imperialistickému přístupu Západu. Přestože každé z děl obsahovalo také poučení ke zlepšení těchto vztahů - odstoupení od předsudků a rovné postavení mezi partnery - nezašly dostatečně daleko ve svém úsilí. Tato díla tak splnila čtenářská očekávání své doby a podpořila další orientalizaci a exotizaci Japonska.This thesis analyses the attitudes of literary characters towards the foreigners in the works Madame Chrysanthemum and Madame Butterfly and compares those attitudes. All factors, which may influence the final impression from these novels, are analysed - time and country of origin, authenticity of the story, narration, even the language chosen for the communication between the characters. The analysis shows that both books present the relation between a western man and a Japanese woman as impossible, but they do so in different ways. While in Madame Chrysanthemum the relationship fails because of the distance the pair keeps between them, the marriage in Madame Butterfly is unviable due to the imperialistic attitude of West towards Japan. Despite the fact that each of the novellas included a way of improving these relations - getting rid of one's prejudices and striving for equality between partners - they didn't go far enough in this endeavour. The works therefore fulfilled the expectations of the readers of their time and supported further orientalising and exoticizing of Japan.
