V posledních letech se stále častěji americká studia, mj. i Disney a Marvel Studios zaměřují na produkci filmů, jejichž zápletka čerpá z čínských mýtů a legend, a ve kterých vystupují čínští herci. Cílem této diplomové práce je proto provést analýzu orientalismu v dobrodružném snímku Schang-Chi a legenda o deseti prstenech, který uvedla do kin v roce 2021 právě společnost Marvel Studios. Byl natočen na motivy komiksu o superhrdinovi Shang-Chim, vydaného vydavatelstvím Marvel Comics poprvé v roce 1973. Hlavní postava Shang-Chi čelí své minulosti, která ho dostihla v podobě tajné zločinecké organizace Deseti prstenů. V teoretické části nejprve definuji důležité pojmy jako jsou Orient, Okcident, orientalistika a orientalismus, poté představím nejvýznamnějšího zastánce teorie orientalismu Edwarda W. Saida, a nakonec svou pozornost zaměřím přímo na dílo D. D. Crettona. V praktické části práce pak určím orientalizující prvky, které posléze rozřadím do tematických kategorií, ty budu dále analyzovat a posoudím, zdali odpovídají skutečnosti a v čem se od ní případně liší a na základě provedeného rozboru vyhodnotím, zda ve filmu převažuje negativní či pozitivní orientalismus. Svou pozornost soustředím na obraz, který tvůrci snímku předkládají svým divákům a provedu jejich evaluaci, jestli tíhnou k stereotypům, tzn. zkreslují prvky čínské kultury nebo se naopak blíží realitě.In recent years, American film studios much more often (e.g., Disney and Marvel Studios) focus on producing films whose storylines center on Chinese legends and myths and featuring Chinese actors. The aim of this thesis is to analyze Orientalism in the adventure film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was released by Marvel Studios production in 2021. It was based on a comic book about a superhero Shang-Chi, published by the company Marvel Comics. The main hero confronts his past, which caught up with him in the form of a secret criminal organization called Ten Rings. In the theoretical section, I will describe the issue of Orientalism and explain important concepts such as Orientalism, Orient and Occident. I will then introduce the Edward W. Said, who was vital in the development of the Orientalism theory, and finally present the director Destin D. Cretton. In the practical section, I will focus on identifying Orientalizing elements, which I am going to then classify into thematic categories. The categories will be further analyzed and assessed to see if they correspond with reality and if not then in what ways they differ. Based on the performed analysis, I will evaluate whether negative or positive orientalism prevails in the film. I am going to focus on the image that the filmmakers are presenting to their audience, if they are inclined to use stereotypes, to show distorted elements of Chinese culture or, on the contrary, portray reality and facts.
