At the beginning of the 20th century, Japan of the Meiji period joined the ranks of the Western powers as a modern superpower in the East Asia. This rapid progress was achieved through a series of decades-long reforms based on the Western models implemented by Japanese statesmen with the help of foreign advisors. In this thesis, I explore the German influences on the medical, military and legal reforms of Meiji Japan and study their impact on the domestic state of affairs. I conclude that the Germanespecially Prussianmodels implemented during these reforms had a major influence on the shape of the Japanese sociopolitical landscape as they led to the consolidation of powers of the ruling class and the military that enacted these reforms. The Meiji reformersoriginating from the military and political cliques of the timeinspired by the conditions of the Prussian state thus also used them to fulfill their political ambitions and enjoyed a major authority in conducting the government. At the same time however, I conclude that the implementation of the German models by Japanese was not a mere imitation of the German patterns but a well-thought process of appropriating and transforming them to fit the traditional Japanese ideas concerning the system of government and society. It is therefore true, that the German influences and its models played a leading role in the modernization of Japan during the reforms of the Meiji period, however, their implemenation did not lead to a full transformation of Japan into a completely Germanized state. Rather, they served as a primary reference used by the Meiji statesmen to achieve a compromise between the established forms of traditional governmnent and popular movements calling for the democratization of the Japanese society.
