Tato diplomová práce se zabývá charakteristikou Nizozemce a Čecha nejprve obecně a poté v období přelomu devatenáctého a dvacátého století. Výzkumná část práce se zabývá aplikací poznatků o nizozemském a českém charakteru na dvě vybraná literární díla z daného období, a tedy Frank van Wezels roemruchte jaren a Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka. Účelem práce je zjistit, zda je možné hlavní postavy obou románů považovat za typické představitele svých národů a pokud ano, dokázaly by tyto dva fiktivní představitelé spolupracovat nebo se dokonce přátelit?The thesis focuses on the Dutch and the Czech national feeling in the period of the end of the nineteenth century until the years after the First World War. These times are significant because of the wave of nationalism going through Europe ifluenced by the romantic ideology. The romantism influenced the national feeling by both the Dutch and the Czech. For Czech people it meant an impuls to action and thein fight ended by creating a the first ever Czech national state. For The Netherlands is this the period of the economical developement. At first I declare the definition of the Dutch and the Czech nation based on stereotypes and results of the demographical researches. I follow up with the historical context of the thesis and further with the national feeling of those times. I finalize my theoretical research by mentioning writers creating in both languages who engaged in the seeking of the national treasure and the illustration of their nations in their works. In the research I focus on two literary works which illustrate the Dutch and the Czech society during the First World War. I decide for the Dutch novel 'Frank van Wezels roemruchte jaren' and the Czech opus 'Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války' in which both the auteurs aimed to illustrate their nations.
