Práce prozkoumává problematiku psaní velkých písmen tak, jak je reflektována v jednotlivých Pravidlech českého pravopisu vydávaných od začátku 20. století. Podává obraz historie pravopisu a také teorii dalšího možného vývoje psaní velkých písmen. Práce sleduje hlavní vývojové tendence jednotlivých případů, v nichž se užívá majuskule, popisuje vývoj těchto případů a také jejich strukturu. Práce se jednotlivě věnuje funkcím, které mohou velká písmena plnit, k čemuž využívá vybraných vydání Pravidel. Dále se práce zaobírá typy pojmenování, podle rozdělení v Pravidlech vydaných v roce 1993 a srovnávací metodou hledá jejich shody a rozdíly v jednotlivých příručkách.This bachelor thesis deals with the language phenomena that are part of the grammar tradition, enabling the formation of Pravidla českého pravopisu (Czech language grammar book) at the beginning of the 20th century. It will deal with the history of orthography since its beginnings until the tradition of the grammar book started. The thesis will focus on the parts dealing with capital letters according to the structure of academic grammar book from 1993. It compares this division with the structure of several other chosen editions, namely from the years 1902, 1926, 1941, 1957 and the 1854 edition of Pravidla českého pravopisu praktickými příklady vysvětlená (Czech language grammar book explained through practical examples). The capital letters are analysed according to their individual functions as explained in the grammar book from 1993. Specifically, it deals with using uppercase letters in writing proper nouns (especially anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms), in expressing respect to a person or people, or in the beginning of a sentence or an abbreviation. The bachelor thesis also examines if the grammar book is sufficient and if it provides adequate information the language user needs to correctly resolve any grammar problem concerning the usage of capital letters. This is also the reason why this bachelor thesis also focuses on the project of Jazyková poradna (Language centre) run by Ústav pro jazyk český AV ČR (Language institute for Czech language). This project helps the language users with resolving ambiguous aspects of the grammar and supplies the source of information for resolving any other linguistic problem. Another alternative information sources the language user can utilize are also included in the analysis. Nowadays they are usually in the form of internet links such as Internetová jazyková příručka (Internet language handbook) with both dictionary part and explanatory part.
