Cílem této práce je přiblížit důvody vzniku, historii a vývoj fenoménu benši v japonské kinematografii. Studiem jak divadelních tak filmovědných pramenů bude nastíněn nejen vývoj benši v čase, ale také jejich propojení s japonskou kinematografií a okolním světem. Pomocí analýzy filmů doprovázených benši bude navíc umožněno hlubší pochopení problematiky. Benši, založení na divadelní tradici a tradici jevištního vystupování jsou zdrojem originality japonské kinematografie, ale také důvodem jejího zpomaleného vývoje. Přestože povolání benši oficiálně zaniklo koncem 30. let 20. století, uchovatele této tradice najdeme i dnes.This bachelor thesis is about unique era of silent film in Japan, when so called benshi were active. Benshi were people, who used to stand next to projected silent movie and using their voice they gave commentary about story, facts and also spoke lines of characters. In the beginning, I will explain about history of benshi and their connection to theatre. Next, I will write about their connection to tradition and film industry, and why they were so popular. They existed also in other countries, but only in Japan they were popular for almost four decades, which was caused mainly by strong tradition of theatre and arts like rakugo. During research I used books and papers concerning this area, and also analyzed some silent films with benshi commentary.
