Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza a porovnání čtyř existujících českých překladů dramatu The Importance of Being Earnest od Oscara Wildea a jejich následné zhodnocení hlediska adekvátnosti pro současného čtenáře. V teoretické části této diplomové práce budou nejprve představeny faktografické informace o Oscaru Wildeovi, o době, kdy drama The Importance of Being Earnest vzniklo, a také vlastní analýza dané hry. Tyto informace budou dále doplněny poznatky z teorie překladu a překladu dramatu, přičemž bude zvláštní pozornost věnována především překladu kulturně specifických prvků, překladu vlastních jmen a překladu humoru a také procesu zastarávání a adekvátnosti překladů. Na základě poznatků představených v teoretické části budou v praktické části této diplomové práce analyzovány a porovnány čtyři české překlady dramatu The Importance of Being Earnest a bude zhodnoceno, které z těchto překladů mohou být považovány za adekvátní z pohledu současného čtenáře.The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse and compare four existing Czech translation of Oscar Wilde's drama The Importance of Being Earnest in order to discover which of these translations can be considered adequate for current Czech readers. In the theoretical part factual information about Oscar Wilde, about the epoch when Oscar Wilde lived and a thorough analysis of the drama The Importance of Being Earnest are gathered. This information is further completed with the knowledge of the theory of translation and of drama translation, with special focus on translation of culture specific features, proper names, humour, the process of obsolescence of translations and the adequacy of translations. In the practical part of this diploma thesis four Czech translations of the drama The Importance of Being Earnest are analysed, compared and evaluated in terms of their adequacy for current readers.
