Předmětem této bakalářské práce je srovnávací analýza tří českých překladů románu Ernesta Hemingwaye _A Farewell to Arms_ se zvláštním důrazem na převod Hemingwayova specifického autorského stylu, který je zcela zásadní pro celkové vyznění díla a jeho působení na čtenáře. První čtyři kapitoly studie tvoří literárněhistorický kontext románu, jenž předkládá podrobnosti z autorova života vztahující se k textu románu, stejně jako okolnosti vzniku díla a jeho přijetí dobovou kritikou i čtenářskou obcí. Následuje představení jednotlivých českých překladatelů díla. Teoretickou část práce uzavírá kapitola o názvu Hemingwayova románu a jeho spletité genezi, která je relevantní jak pro oblast literární historie, tak teorie překladu. Analytická část studie se zabývá problematikou převodu stylistických návyků a rozhodnutí autora v různých textových rovinách. Analýza se soustředí na nejvýznamnější prvky Hemingwayova jazyka, tj. jeho práci s understatementem (nedořečeností), syntaxí, expresivitou (spolu s cenzurou vulgarismů v díle), cizojazyčnou vrstvou a konečně dialogy. Jednotlivé podkapitoly nejprve charakterizují tyto stylotvorné prvky a jejich funkci v anglickém originálu a posléze kriticky okomentují jejich překlad do češtiny prostřednictvím konfrontace všech překladových řešení reprezentativních textových vzorků s originálem. Závěr práce pak na základě dílčích poznatků analytické části zhodnotí obecné tendence českých překladů románu, které poukazují na pozoruhodně rozdílné strategie jejich autorů.The subject of this Bachelor's thesis is a comparative analysis of the three Czech translations of Ernest Hemingway's _A Farewell to Arms_, with special attention paid to the rendition of Hemingway's specific writing style, which is crucial for the overall impression the novel makes upon its reader. The first four chapters of the study comprise a literary-historical background of the novel, introducing the biographical details of the author which are pertinent to his text, as well as the situation in which the novel was written and received by its original readership and critical audience. Subsequently, the three translators of the novel into Czech are introduced. The theoretical portion of the thesis is concluded by a chapter discussing the title of Hemingway's novel and its complicated genesis, which is of interest both to the fields of literary history and translation studies. The analytical part of the study deals with the issue of translating the original author's stylistic habits and choices on various textual levels. The analysis focuses on the most significant features of Hemingway's use of language, i.e., his work with understatement, syntax, expressiveness (along with the censorship of vulgarisms in the novel), foreign-language aspects, and, finally, the dialogue. Each of the sub-chapters begins by discussing one of these individual features and its function in the English original before proceeding to a critical commentary upon its rendering into Czech by means of a comparison of various representative textual samples with the source text. Using the partial findings of the analytical part, the present thesis determines the general tendencies of the Czech translations of the novel, showing the remarkably different strategies of their respective authors.
