Teoretická část je rozdělena do tří oblastí, z nichž první se zabývá náhradní rodinnou péčí napříč historii až po charakteristiku jednotlivých forem péče. V druhé části je pozornost věnována pěstounské péči, protože právě tato forma náhradní rodinné péče je v diplomové práci stěžejním tématem. Popisuje její vývoj, druhy, uvádí práva a povinnosti plynoucí z pěstounské péče. Teoretickou část uzavírá třetí oblast, která je věnována evropskému projektu, který probíhal v uplynulých dvou letech a svou pozornost směřoval k mládeži ohrožené sociálně patologickými jevy. Pro Českou republiku se cílovou skupinou staly právě děti žijící v pěstounské péči. Praktická část pojednává o prarodičích, jejich rolích v životě rodiny a v životě dítěte, o prarodičích a pěstounství. Úvod praktické části obsahuje také legislativní ukotvení pěstounské péče a pěstounské péče prarodičů, jejich povinnosti a práva. Poukazuje na problematiku ?dvougeneračních? soužití, ke kterým dochází v případě prarodičů pěstounů. Stěžejní oblastí praktické části práce je kvalitativní výzkumné šetření, které bylo realizováno na základě rozhovorů, pozorování a rozhovorů na základě pozorování s vybranými účastníky zmíněného projektu. Praktickou část uzavírají případové studie vybraných účastníků projektu.
